CANDACE FLEMING is the author of more than forty books. Among her nonfiction titles are the Sibert-honor winning Enigma Girls, the Los Angeles Times Book Prize winning The Family Romanov and Honeybee, winner of the 2021 Sibert medal. Her most recent title, Death in the Jungle, garnered eight starred reviews, was named a Kirkus Prize finalist and won the Boston Globe Horn Book Award for Nonfiction, as well as the YALSA Excellence in Nonfiction Award. Candace is also the recipient of both the Margaret A. Edwards Award for her significant contribution to teenage literature, and the Children’s Literature Legacy Award for her “substantial and lasting contribution to children’s literature through books that demonstrate integrity and respect for all children’s lives and experiences.”

About the Visit
Candace Fleming’s goal at her school visits is to get kids fired up about writing! Her talks are interactive and highly visual, use elements of storytelling, and are full of humor.
Candace is fantastic with audiences of all sizes and the breadth of her books— picture books for younger readers plus biographies, novels, and stories for middle grade and YA—makes her a great fit for elementary, middle, and high school audiences.
Tailored to the age of her audience, the focus of Candace Fleming’s presentations is the writing process. For younger grades (preK to first) the emphasis is on finding and telling the stories around us. The discussion becomes more specific with second and third grade, focusing on revision and editing; with older grades (fourth and up) the conversations turns to research, the use of primary documents, and creating compelling, true stories from a string of dull facts.
Candace is also available for professional development sessions on inspiring students to become “history detectives” through research and writing skills.
